Our exterior painting process
- Inspection. We walk the house with you, check for peeling, bare wood, rot, mildew, and failed caulk, and confirm colors and the scope.
- Protection. We cover plants, walkways, decks, and lights, and keep windows and doors clean.
- Washing. We wash off dirt, chalk, and mildew so the new paint can bond to a clean surface.
- Scraping and sanding. We remove loose and peeling paint and sand rough edges so the transitions are smooth.
- Repairs and caulking. We fill small holes, re-caulk joints and seams, and tell you about any rotted wood that needs a carpenter before paint.
- Priming. Bare wood, repairs, and stains get primer so the finish coats last.
- Finish coats. We apply quality exterior paint by brush, roller, or sprayer, based on the surface.
- Cleanup and walkthrough. We remove all materials and walk the house with you to check the work.
Surfaces we paint
Wood clapboard and shingles, vinyl, aluminum, and fiber cement siding, trim, soffits and fascia, windows and sashes, doors and garage doors, shutters, porches and railings, and stucco and masonry.
Built for New England weather
Freeze-thaw cycles, humid summers, snow, and salt air on the coast are hard on paint. Paint fails when water gets behind it, so we pay close attention to caulk joints, bare wood, and the bottom edges of clapboards. We plan painting days around temperature, humidity, and rain so the paint can cure correctly.
Older homes and lead-based paint
Many homes in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine were built before 1978 and may have lead-based paint under newer layers. Federal lead-safe work rules apply when work disturbs that paint. Ask us during the estimate how we plan the prep on your home.

Exterior Painting questions
When is the best time of year to paint a house exterior in New England?
Late spring through early fall is the usual season. Paint needs dry surfaces and temperatures above the paint maker's minimum during the day and overnight. We watch the forecast and move days when rain or cold is coming.
How long does exterior painting take?
Most single-family homes take about one to two weeks, depending on size, height, the condition of the surfaces, and the weather. Your estimate includes the expected schedule.
Do I need to be home while you paint the outside?
No. We need access to the outside of the house, water, and a place to park. We keep you updated and do a final walkthrough with you at the end.
Can you paint vinyl siding?
Often, yes. Vinyl can be painted with a product made for vinyl in a color that is not much darker than the original, so the siding does not warp in the sun. We will tell you if your siding is a good candidate.
How long does exterior paint last?
Many New England exteriors need a repaint every 7 to 10 years. Sides with strong sun, homes near the ocean, and trim and porches can need care sooner. Good prep and the right primer make the biggest difference.
