Our deck and fence staining process
- Inspect. We check for loose boards, popped nails, and soft or rotted wood, and tell you about anything that needs repair first.
- Protect. We cover plants, house siding, and nearby surfaces.
- Clean. We wash the wood to remove dirt, mildew, and old, failing stain, so the new stain can soak in.
- Sand. We sand rough spots, splinters, and raised grain where needed.
- Stain or seal. We apply the stain by brush, roller, or pad, and work it into the boards, edges, and end grain.
- Final check. We walk the deck or fence with you when the work is done.
Choosing a stain
- Clear and transparent sealers show the natural wood and protect against water, but need recoating more often.
- Semi-transparent stains add color and UV protection while the grain still shows.
- Solid stains give the most color and coverage and work well on older wood.
The right choice depends on the age and condition of the wood and the look you want. We will show you samples.
Cedar shingles and coastal homes
Many homes in Southern Maine, the New Hampshire Seacoast, and the Massachusetts North Shore have cedar shingles. We stain and treat cedar siding and trim to protect it from salt air, sun, and moisture.

Deck & Fence Staining questions
How often should a deck be stained?
Many decks in New England need fresh stain every two to four years. Horizontal surfaces wear faster than railings and fences because they get sun, water, snow, and foot traffic.
What is the difference between semi-transparent and solid stain?
Semi-transparent stain lets the wood grain show and soaks into the wood. Solid stain looks more like paint, hides the grain, and covers older and weathered wood better. We will help you choose.
How long after rain can you stain a deck?
The wood must be dry. That usually means one or two dry days after rain, depending on sun and temperature. We plan around the forecast.
Do you stain new pressure-treated wood?
Yes, but new pressure-treated wood often needs time to dry before it takes stain well. We can check the wood and tell you when it is ready.
