Our cabinet painting process

  1. Remove and label. We take off doors, drawer fronts, and hardware, and label every piece so it goes back in the same place.
  2. Protect the kitchen. We cover counters, floors, appliances, and walls.
  3. Degrease and clean. Kitchen cabinets carry grease and residue that stop paint from sticking. We clean every surface first.
  4. Sand and repair. We scuff-sand the surfaces, fill dings, and caulk gaps where needed.
  5. Prime. A bonding primer gives the finish a strong base and blocks stains and wood tannins.
  6. Paint. We apply cabinet-grade paint for a smooth, even finish on the doors, drawer fronts, frames, and boxes.
  7. Reinstall. We put the doors, drawers, and hardware back, adjust the hinges, and walk the kitchen with you.

Paint or replace?

If your cabinets are solid and the layout works for you, painting is usually the faster and less expensive way to get a new look. It is also a good time to add new hardware. If the boxes are water-damaged or you want a new layout, replacement may make more sense. We will give you an honest answer during the estimate.

White and off-white are classic. Navy, deep green, and gray are popular for islands and lower cabinets, often with lighter uppers. We can help you test samples in your kitchen’s light before you choose.

Cabinet Painting questions

Is painting cabinets cheaper than replacing them?

In most cases, yes. If your cabinet boxes and doors are solid, painting costs a fraction of new cabinets and takes much less time. If the boxes are damaged or the layout does not work, replacement can be the better choice.

How long does cabinet painting take?

A typical kitchen takes about one week, because each coat of primer and paint needs time to dry and cure. Your estimate includes a schedule.

Can I use my kitchen while you paint the cabinets?

Partly. We cover and protect the kitchen, and the doors and drawers are often painted away from the cabinet boxes. You will have limited use of the cabinets until the finish is dry.

Will the paint chip?

Durability comes from cleaning, sanding, and a good bonding primer under a cabinet-grade paint. Paint needs a few weeks to fully cure, so be gentle with the doors at first.

Can you paint stained wood or laminate cabinets?

Solid wood and most wood veneer cabinets paint well. Some laminate and thermofoil cabinets do not hold paint well. We will check your cabinets during the estimate and give you an honest answer.
