When Is the Best Time to Paint a House Exterior in New England?

By KLW Painting · Published

Temperature, humidity, and morning dew matter as much as the month. Here is how to plan exterior painting in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine.

In New England, the exterior painting season is short and valuable. The weather decides when paint can go on and how long it will last. Here is what matters and how to plan.

The usual season: late spring to early fall

In most of Massachusetts, Southern New Hampshire, and Southern Maine, exterior painting runs from about May to October. The exact dates change each year. A warm April or a mild October can add days. A wet June can take them away.

Temperature: check the paint can, not only the calendar

Every exterior paint has a minimum temperature for application. Many modern acrylic paints can go on at lower temperatures than older products, but the minimum applies to the air and the surface, and it must hold for several hours after the paint goes on. Cold nights matter. If the temperature drops quickly after sunset, the paint may not cure correctly.

Very hot days are also a problem. Paint on a hot, sunny wall dries too fast, which can cause lap marks and poor bonding. Painters often follow the shade around the house for this reason.

Moisture: dew, rain, and humidity

Paint needs a dry surface. In New England, morning dew and fog are common, especially near the coast. A good crew waits for the siding to dry before it starts and stops early enough that the paint can set before evening dew. Rain within a few hours of painting can wash out fresh paint, so painters watch the forecast closely and move days when needed.

Coastal homes need extra care

Homes near the ocean in places like Revere, Lynn, Portsmouth, Kittery, and York face salt, wind, and strong sun. These homes benefit from a careful wash before painting, good primer on bare wood, and quality coatings. Plan the project for a stretch of stable weather.

When to book your painter

Exterior painting calendars fill up early. If you want your house painted in late spring or summer, it is a good idea to get estimates in late winter or early spring. Fall projects are possible too, but cooler nights shorten the workday and the season.

What you can do in the off-season

Winter is a good time for interior painting and cabinet painting, which do not depend on the outside weather. It is also a good time to choose exterior colors and get estimates, so your project is ready to start when the weather turns.
